Y's Men's Club
The Y's Men's service clubs have been invaluable supporters of the Cannon Memorial YMCA since the first club initiated in Kannapolis on March 17, 1941. The club was renamed the J.T. Fesperman club in honor of the founder, a former YMCA CEO. The John R. Mott club was chartered in October 1946 and the Henry Grimes club was chartered in 1955. Interestingly, the Fesperman club membership was predominantly professionals from the mill while the Mott club was comprised of mostly second shift foremen. Many mill professionals gained their leadership experience through the YMCA.
Bobby Eagle, president of the Mott club remembers that the club sold Christmas trees that came by box car from Nova Scotia, Canada prior to the planting of local trees. The trees were sold for 75 cents each. He also remembers once getting a bad batch of trees and a woman putting a tree on top of her car; the tree was bare before she got home so she came back and was given another one. The Mott club has hosted a pancake breakfast twice a year since 1968 as a fundraiser, most of the funds channeled right back into YMCA programs.
The Mott club also became the first local Y's Men's club to install a female member. Mrs. Vicki Lozier was inducted into the Mott club in the early 1990's and she was assigned to staff the club. Subsequently she became the first female club president, the first female regional director and the first female regional treasurer.
