Autism speaks swim lessons
The Cannon Y is thankful for a $2,000 grant from Autism Speaks to offer five, 30-minute, private swim lessons to 20 individuals on the spectrum. This program allows us to fulfill our mission as we develop youth through healthy living.

As a socially responsible community partner, the Cannon Y welcomes many to our pools daily. Specifically, this program is individually tailored to meet the needs of those putting their face under the water for the first time to those advancing their swim stroke. “We are ready to celebrate any and all successes,” says Alisa McNiffe of the Aquatics Department.

Alisa continues, “I just spoke to the mom of an autistic four-year-old. He is nonverbal; however when he is in the water, he relaxes enough to speak a few words. It moves me to tears. These lessons are going to be life-changing for these swimmers. God is working through our facility once again!”
