The Cannon Memorial YMCA has strengthened the families of Cabarrus County, North Carolina since its founding in 1908. For over a century, the Y has served as a center of social and recreational activity, as well as a place of hope that has changed many lives. With three locations in Kannapolis, West Cabarrus and Harrisburg, the Y focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
History and Locations
The Cannon Memorial YMCA's rich history began in Kannapolis in 1908. For many years the Cannon Y served as the primary recreation for the City of Kannapolis. The original YMCA buildings offered a bowling alley, movie theater, library, swimming pools and more. Today's Kannapolis Branch opened on January 18, 1987 and has seen several renovations over the years.
Before the West Cabarrus Branch was built we served this community out of a little white house on Pitts School Road located in Harrisburg. In 1998-99 discussions began to build a YMCA in the heart of Afton Village. With contributions from David Mayfield, the City of Concord, NorthEast Medical Center and the Cannon Foundation we moved forward with the construction of the West Cabarrus YMCA. The 65,000 sq. foot branch opened on October 5, 2003.
Before the opening of the West Cabarrus branch, the Cannon Memorial YMCA served the town of Harrisburg from a remote location in a small mill house on Pitts School Road. From here the residents of Harrisburg could register for youth sports, swim lessons, summer camp, special events and more. This office closed and re-opened its service at the new West Cabarrus branch. However, we recognized the needs of Harrisburg residents, which led to the opening of the Harrisburg Branch on December 3, 2006. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Harrisburg Town Hall.
We believe that everyone in our community should have the opportunity to benefit from Cannon Memorial YMCA's programs and services. We are a community-based nonprofit with the mission to help people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body. Our Open Doors Program is central to our mission. When someone loses a job, when medical bills become overwhelming, or when other challenging situations occur, people need the support of the YMCA. This Open Doors program offers a fee scale to fit the financial situation of individuals in our community. We want all people to be involved with the programs and services of the Cannon Y that nurture spirit, mind and body—especially during difficult times when they are needed most.
Utilize your talents to empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. Opportunities include mentoring, fundraising and advocacy.
Join us in this amazing work—to develop your skills, to realize your leadership potential and to discover a career that is so much more than a job. We are so much more than a gym, we’re a movement.
The Cannon Y considers the individual needs of every person and the ability of the program to meet those needs. Please inform the Y during the enrollment process if you or a family member requires any special accommodation. This information enables the YMCA to better meet your needs or those of a family member, within available resources and to the extent reasonable. All staff that will be working with you or a family member with special needs will be informed of how to care for or meet those needs.
