Those Hot Days of Summer - Day Camp & After School
The more things change, the more they stay the same. The YMCA Summer Day Camp experience today reflects many of the original activities enjoyed at Camp Elliott. Current day camp and Camp Elliott activities included swimming, arts and crafts and trips along with specialty camps like science, drama and Camp Chlorine (swimming camp).

In 2004, Cannon Memorial YMCA Summer Day Camp opened its doors to include children diagnosed with autism and other special needs through funding from the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, offering the only "inclusion" camp in Cabarrus County. Camp counselors continue to share the core values of the YMCA with young people: respect, responsibility, honesty, caring and faith.
The YMCA afterschool program continues to meet the needs of the community. Cannon Memorial YMCA provides affordable care for hundreds of children each year in the afterschool program. YMCA afterschool programs not only build character in young people, but give many families the support they need to work. Students participate in activities that include homework assistance, swimming, 4-H club and Girl Scouts.
In 2008, the YMCA obtained funding for two non-traditional after school programs. The Support Our Students (SOS) and CARE (a collaboration with Department of Social Services and the Boys and Girls Club) are programs that reach out to at-risk youth in the community to provide resources such as academic enhancement, drug and alcohol abuse prevention and career exploration.
