Sarah McLellan Recognized as a ’30 Under 30’ YMCA Leader
Congratulations to Sarah McLellan, who has been selected from more than 230 nominees from 80 associations for the first class of ’30 Under 30’ YMCA leaders honored by the YMCA's Emerging Leaders Resource Network.
As a 26-year-old female on the leadership team of a primarily male-led association, Sarah is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion at every level. In sharing stories of scholarship recipients, highlighting staff in the newsletter and designing promotional materials, Sarah focuses on representing all members equally to ensure that new potential members, donors, and volunteers know they will be accepted and can thrive at the Y, as they are. After attending the EMLE Regional Conference in Charlotte recently, Sarah prepared a set of top priorities to focus on to help empower the emerging leaders at all levels. Sarah’s CEO trusts her to run with some of these initiatives, her first of which will be working with several interested board members to identify and begin engaging a more diverse pipeline of future board members.
Commitment to the Y
Sarah joined the YMCA in October of 2016, focusing on developing a culture of philanthropy at her three branches. Historically, her Association has not developed a strategic plan centered on fundraising; therefore, her first task was to do just that. Currently, Sarah and her team are in the silent phase of a $25 million capital campaign (expanding and renovating two of her YMCAs and building a new YMCA to replace a current express facility), and are days away from finishing the Friends and Family Division (staff and board gifts).
Welcome Philip Belfield and Brett Crosby!
Philip Belfield is the new executive director of the Kannapolis Branch and Brett Crosby is the new executive director of the Harrisburg Branch.
“I enthusiastically support the new management structure as a direct answer to the Cannon Y’s strategic goals,” said Donor Development Committee Chairman of the Board Bill Hubbard. “Our commitment is to make the Y a welcoming place, where the Cabarrus Community can enjoy a quality, well kept environment while receiving service from ‘world-class’ staff.”
BB&T Bank Partners with Cannon YMCA
B&BT Bank is partnering with the Cannon YMCA to support active lifestyle choices for individuals and families in Cabarrus County.
[Concord, NC], (June 1, 2017) – BB&T Bank values the importance of giving back to the community and promoting healthy, fun activities for all. That is why they have signed on as the Title Sponsor for the Cannon Memorial YMCA Race Series.
The Cannon Y Race Series includes three events; the Harrisburg 5K/10K, the West Cabarrus Pumpkin Roll 5K & Fall Festival, and the Kannapolis Frostbite 5K – held in the spring, fall and winter respectively. BB&T is sponsoring each of these events to help promote healthy, family-friendly activities in Cabarrus County.
As the Title Sponsor for these events, BB&T will join forces with the Cannon Y to encourage the community to stay active and participate in programs that positively impact members of Cabarrus County. “Making the communities in which we work better places to be is a big part of the BB&T mission. Participating in activities that promote healthy lifestyles while supporting families in need is a great way to exemplify that mission,” says Rob Betler, BB&T Market President of Cabarrus and Rowan County. BB&T’s gift will support the Open Doors Scholarship program, which provides financial assistance to YMCA members who otherwise are unable to afford critical programs like swim lessons, afterschool and camp.

Shane’s Rib Shack Partners with Cannon YMCA
The newest location of Shane’s Rib Shack (Concord), partners with the Cannon YMCA to support healthy lifestyle habits of kids and teens in Cabarrus County.
[Concord, NC], (February 10, 2017) – Shane’s Rib Shack, famously known for their fast and casual BBQ, values the importance of giving back to the community. That is why they have decided to become All-Star Sponsors of Spring and Fall Youth Sports at the West Cabarrus YMCA in 2017.
While a BBQ restaurant and a sports program may not naturally go hand-in-hand, Shane’s Rib Shack of Concord wants to help the YMCA promote balanced, healthy lifestyle choices. The Christian mission of the YMCA and the breadth of programs it offers to the community is what appealed most to Shane’s Rib Shack when they began selecting local nonprofits to partner with. “Seeing the YMCA’s impact on Cabarrus County made it an easy cause to get behind. We look forward to partnering with the Y to keep our newest community healthy,” said Michael Bridgers, Regional Sales Director at Shane’s Rib Shack of Concord.
