Meet Fred and Phyllis Marodin
Fred and Phyllis Madorin, two Active Older Adults, can often be found at the Harrisburg YMCA. After moving to Harrisburg almost two years ago, they have found the Cannon Y to be a place where many people from the community gather, form friendships and work together to achieve their health goals.
They moved to Harrisburg to be closer to their adult children and grandchildren. Just before Christmas, they welcomed their first great-grandchild into the world. Most recently from St. Louis, the Madorins have lived in Indiana, eastern and western Pennsylvania and traveled the world. One thing they noticed since moving to Cabarrus County, is that there is truly a culture of respect, neighborly duty and community. This culture, Phyllis and Fred explain, is mirrored in everything the Y does.
Fred enjoys using the elliptical machine, while Phyllis takes advantage of Group Exercise classes such as Eccentrics and Chair Yoga. Her favorite class is Zumba Gold, which she participates in twice a week. Both of them enjoy helping newcomers to the Y figure out what works best for them. “It’s great to see the class instructors teach to the individual levels of members. There will be people in the same class that are 20 years apart in age, and they show us two ways to complete the workout so we can choose what we’re able to do without pushing too hard.”
Having memberships at the Y is a blessing to them and allows them to focus on their health consistently. They note that it can be a bit of a surprise when your strength decreases as you age, since many Active Older Adults are still so young at heart and in their minds. For them, that’s all the more reason to participate in Y programs and maintain a consistent level of strength and overall well-being. Having staff and other members keep you on track is another benefit of the Y, they explain. “It really is like a big family. Class instructors greet everybody and veteran members take new members under their wing, and people notice when you don’t show up for your regular workouts.” Having that level of accountability, in addition to what the Y offers socially, is a surefire way to stick with your health and wellness goals.
